Some are merely given a pass or fail, but commonly taught masters degree grades are fail, pass, merit (or credit) and distinction. The 100-point scale is a percentage based grading system. In a percentage-based system, each assignment regardless of size, type, or complexity, is given a percentage score: nine correct answers out of ten is a score of 90%.
We want to be sure we are evaluating student work fairly, in the sense that our judgment is not subjective or inconsistent. Students deserve fairness and GSIs work hard to deliver it. Grades aren’t impossible to figure out with a good calculator or sharp pencil, but plopping percentages onto papers does take a moment or two of concentration.
